What tree/shrub (as a standard) would be ideal for my dads small, north facing front...

...garden? My dad is after a small tree or a shrub that he could have growing in the middle of the lawn in his small front garden. It is north facing so receives little sunlight in the summer and none at all in the winter.

It ideally shouldn't be much larger than 2m high. Soil is isn't very clay, but not sandy either (but not loamy either too !!).

Ideas have been things such as Sorbus 'joseph rock'. Any more ?
