He staggered to his feet after being thrown on the deck for the umpteenth time. Thunder roared like a wild beast as the winds drove the rain drops against the poor ship, which they struck like bullets. The ship lurched drunkenly in the gale and its timbers groaned in protest. Waves as tall as small hills swept over the sides of the ship and flowed on the deck, making it slick as ice. He raced as fast as he could towards shelter, which lay tantalizingly close, yet so far. He dodged the flailing limbs of others who had the misfortune of being outside when the monster storm suddenly pounced upon them. He gripped the guardrail just in time; the ship gave an almighty jump and several people fell overboard. The man just in front of him gave a terror-stricken yell that would haunt him for many years to come. The man seemed to do a back-flip over the railing and into the merciless ocean. He once again rose to his feet and sprinted towards the door and salvation, reaching in just in time. However, it was locked. With a wild desperation, he pummeled it with his fists and feet, but to no avail. He turned around and surveyed the scene before him.
Darkness swept its dark, mysterious cloak over them. Vivid flashed of lightning often streaked through the sky, punctuating the eerie sky. Dreary, dark clouds spat rain down on the earth with disgust. Their silhouettes contrasted against the sky in flashes of lightning, looking like monstrous abominations looming over the ship, its menacing presence struck fear into the man’s heart like a dagger. The rocking back and forth of the ship made the contents of his stomach churn, making bile rise to his throat.
The storm had been pounding them for what seemed like an eternity, and it seemed like it would never end. The sky stayed as black and ominous as ever. However, there was a tiny patch of clarity, and a single twinkling star smiled down on them, casting a glimmer of hope. However, it was short lived as the cruel wind whipped the clouds aside and they invaded the clearing in the sky with ease for the star barely put up a fight. The man’s heart sank as the star was obscured by dark, evil clouds.
The powerful wind pushed the inky black sea to form waves which battered the hull. The wood creaked and groaned like an old man as the relentless waves punched it angrily. In several places, the hull was on the verge of giving in to the brute force of the sea, and that would be disastrous. The mast swayed dangerously, threatening to topple over. The sails were in shambles, to a point where they were far beyond repair. There were gaping holes in the soft fabric, tattered and worn. All the while, the thunder growled and roared, its fury bringing fear to the bravest of hearts, and the lightning flashed, throwing the world into white light for a split second. The storm had brought along a thick fog. It hovered lazily over them, shrouding the man’s view with its mysterious blankness.
Amazingly, the storm worsened, and the bellowing of thunder was ever-present. The man clutched his drenched clothes to him, his teeth clattering together as he shivered. The cold was different than anything he had ever experienced; it leeched on any warmth in his body. Waves cascaded against the ship and tossed it about like a toy with ease. The man struggled with all his remaining strength to stay on his feet, and the rain kept falling.
