Well it all depends on what Broadway show you're seeing.
If you're seeing a more casual, laid back, just have fun type show, than you can probably get away with wearing jeans and a shirt.
However, if you're seeing a opera type music like Wicked or something on the lines of that, than you should wear at least dressy pants and a nice shirt with nice shoes.

you should definitely dress up for a broadway show. jeans should be okay if you dress it up

If it's a matinee, wear anything you want. People even wear jeans to the opera these days.
But for an evening performance, a nice pair of slacks and a pretty top are fine. Don't get overdressed. You'll feel entirely out of place.
