What to wear and gift the hosts for a drinks buffet reception?

I am invited to a party in quite a posh venue in London (museum/cultural centre type). It is a 60th birthday and an anniversary party of a colleague who I don't know that well. First of all I need ideas on what to wear and whether to take a gift and if so what. I asked other colleagues who know the person better if they are taking a gift but they said no (they are guys). However the party is also celebrating his and his wife's 40th anniversary. I am going with another female colleague and we are not sure.
Sorry I forgot to say I am female early 30s (for ideas of attire).

I would wear a nice cocktail dress - can't go wrong with a little black dress. Bring a shawl or nice jacket in case it gets chilly.

I would definitely bring at least one if not two gifts - perhaps a nice bottle of wine for the couple and at least a nice card and a small remembrance for the wife's birthday.

If you would like to get something a bit more personalised for the couple, you could ask around to see what their interests are - perhaps tickets to an event (you could perhaps go in on price with some other attendees if you like). Another idea is a voucher for a restaurant or shop.

Good luck and enjoy the party
