What to say in mingling with a british for the 1st time?

I went to this party last week and it's full eith british. I tried to talk about general things but their responses were not good and I felt not welcomed. I'm a bit clueless in mingling, I know. Could you tell me what makes british people interested to talk about? British Ladies and Gentlemen, what makes you interested to talk with someone? I really appreciate your developing answers. Thank you!

You wait until they talk to you. They are very 'stiff upper lip' around new people, takes time to break through to them. You nearly made a nuisance out of yourself!
Peace.

P.S. What is a 'developing answer'?

I'm sorry you didn't feel welcome. British people ARE a little more reserved than a lot of other nationalities, but that is just our way - we like new people to be quite reserved too so that we can decide what we think about them without a lot of chit-chat. Maybe you were trying just a little too hard?

Generally we like to talk about exactly the same things as other people do, and the best topic at a party is always 'how do you know (the host),' and then 'have you come far?' or 'what do you do?'

However, If you say you have trouble mingling, perhaps the fault is yours and not because they were British? maybe they were just a little more reserved and/or surprised by your lack of social skills?

As a friend you trust to watch you in a social situation and tell you if they think you are going wrong somewhere.

:-)

Immerse yourself in some of their culture and talk about some of their news and history. it'll cut the tension like a hot knife through butter... if that doesn't work... ALCOHOL!!!...jk... booze is not always the best solution...
