What to do/ say when going to court for reckless driving in Virginia?

I recently got into a car accident by swerving out of the way of a cat running out into the street and into a parked car. When I was at the ER I was given my ticket by the officer which was for reckless driving, according to my research it is based on either faulty brakes -or- not having proper control of the vehicle (which I believe is why it was written) I have been issued a order to go to court over the ticket, in September (my accident was 2 days ago, so it seems like a rather long wait to me.)

This is my first offense and accident, and I was wondering what do you think I should go about doing? I really do not know how to proceed with this. Thank you!
