I just purchased a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Limited and it cuts off when put into reverse unless I give it a lot of gas! Also I was told tht the "catalyst convertor" might be bad. Are these two things related and do these things normally go bad in this particular model car?

the catalytic converter is the device connected to your muffler that controls the emissions.. i don't think that would be why it quits in reverse.. your idle might be set to low or it could be a timing issue. some garages will diagnose the problem for free but some might charge like 25 bucks. go in and have a scanner put on the computer to see whats wrong.. then get it fixed or junk the car.. might not be worth the money seeing as its a 93

It very well could be a clogged up catalytic converter causing the problem but I'd also have the IAC (idle air control) valve checked and the throttle body and its components cleaned as well. That did wonders for the low RPM idle in my ZJ (grand Cherokee pre '99)
