My husband and I added another addition to our family on Sunday.
The lady told me he was very close to 8 weeks old- yesterday when we took him to the vet they said he was only 6. (TOO FRICKING YOUNG, I KNOW!!)
The first night, I put him in a pen near our bed with potty paper/food/water and a blanket. He whine whine whiined for hours, I think the amount of time he didnt whine was about 1.5 hrs all together. We ignored him, no cooing, no cuddling, no attention, thinking he'd get the point that whining is not going to get him anywhere.
Last night (his second night with us), I put him in the bathroom (where its cooler) and thinking if he was farther away from us he'd just go to sleep, he scratched at the door and whined all night long again.
He is 3/4 pom and 1/4 pap, I know they are very vocal dogs as I've had a chi-pom before. I also know hes really young and misses the mama and the siblings a lot. He follows us everywhere around the house and if we're walking too fast and hes not RIGHT behind at our heels he'll whine a lot too.
Any suggestions as to what I can do?
I want to teach him the he'll be ok and that whining will not get him anywhere. I also don't want to develop an anxiety/separation issues later on.
Has anyone tried anything that has actually worked for them???
I know that...like any good thing. It takes time and patience and work.
I know that we have to be consistent with him. But where do I start?
*No need to add the comment about putting warm water in a pouch because we live on Oahu where its HOTT enough.*
Thanks in advance!!
Thank you guys for your responses.
I kept him near our bed in a pen the first night, but that didn't help.
I do have another dog and 3 cats, all of whom get along just fine with him.
The reason why I wanted to keep him confined is because hes only partially house trained and I don't want him to have a run of the house.
Im worried that if he sleeps with us till hes older, he'll get use to it. As actions form habits, more action will be needed to undo those habits.
I will try to get a clock for him!
Any more suggestions??
