What the heck are Tort laws?

First question is what the heck are Tort laws? Are there only two or three types? And how do they impact security professionals

"Tort law" refers to the law that governs civil wrongs that do not arise out of a contract.

There are a ton of torts.

Security professionals would probably be most concerned with the intentional torts assault, battery, and false imprisonment.

If you are working in a business, you would probably also be concerned with duty of care you are required to take to ensure that the property is safe for customers.

Wikipedia has a whole bunch of reasonably accurate information on torts. I wouldn't use it as a substitute for legal advice, though.

Tort law is civil laws, as opposed to criminal laws.

Tort laws deal with being sued, so security professionals need to be aware of these laws to keep themselves out of civil cases.

Hope this helps.
