Now im no medical expert. but when i played footy you could only stub your toe into the turf & it bloody hurt. then the fun part was trying to explain to people why you are wearing one shoe & one thong in the middle of winter. yeah good luck with that!

Specifically in the NFL,probably in the late 70's..when artificial turf was widely used. The problem with atrificial turf, (Astroturf, it was called), was that is was not spongy and it was laid on a hard undersurface. It used to cause a severe toe sprain, from repeatedly pushing off out of the 3 point grid iron stance.

The were also turf burns called Astroburns. Later they went to a spongy suirface..and the incidence of knee injuries shot up...but then the NFL players were using flat non cleated shoes, but all kinds of problems still occurred

Turf toe is basically a sprained toe joints in the big toe. First basically named with football players in America on the original artificial turfs that are no longer in use. The turf did not have enough give to push off when you run, and you sprain your big toe. It is very painful.
