what technique does the Martial Arts experts use to break wood?

i don' mean here the name of the kicks
but i think it's something related to power energy or how the martial arts experts balance energy on themselves ;p
 
it depends on what kind of piece of wood it is. so you can break wood with a punch, a sidekick, a round kick, a palm fist, an axe kick, a hammer fist and lots of other moves. hope this helps
