What substance can I apply to a shiny silver surface to darken it? Bicycle grease maybe?

I am trying to determine a greasy substance (such as bicycle chain grease?) -- or like material that would easily affixate permanently to a shiny metallic silver surface in order to turn it a flat blackened color.

I would like to get some ideas so I don't have to trial and error for the next year

thanx

grease won't stick on it permanently...

silver will naturally get an "aged" look from oxidizing in the air but for a fast effective process look for "liver of sulfur". it's a chemical that'll oxidize silver and give it an off-black colour.

other easier but less effective methods would be chlorine bleach or black paint.
