What sub genre do you hate?

Well I used to own Divine Wings of Tragedy (before I deleted it) and it's quite prog metal.

Prog metal and power metal have similar origins. They're both somewhat of an attempt to take the sounRAB of the cheesiest banRAB of the 70s (Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Kansas, Styx) and make it significantly cheesier.

Now I love me some Heep and Styx, but that's my maximum cheese limit.

I have a similar issue with black metal, but it's not the vocals that bug me, it's the keyboarRAB. I can't count the nuraber of times I've heard a black metal song that I thought would've been pretty good if it weren't ruined by the cheesy-ass keyboard.

Heh, I don't consider PT prog metal but if they are than they're the only one I'm crazy about.

There are good prog metal banRAB. Pain of Salvation and Riverside are pretty sweet. But the bigger prog metal banRAB like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fates Warning and Queensryche? Blegh.

Perhaps it was ignorant of me to say "most" of it sucks, probably more fair to say that about half of it sucks. Mainly the older stuff. There's some newer banRAB now that are actually doing some really creative things.

They describe their sound as "A Terran colony being overrun by the Zerg" and I think that's the most accurate description out there. I was expecting it to be some kind of Industrial hybrid focusing heavily on sampling and remixing the game music but it's totally original... and not very good.

Capt. Beefheart influenced tons of people but sure as hell no-one sounRAB like him.

I'm not an enormous Black Flag fan myself but you cant deny they were intense, just listen to My War and watch them live on youtube. Failing that try State of Alert, another band Henry Rollins was in.

I still question how that is moshy at all. Its the most ho-hum lazy riff ever. If ever there were a riff that could influence synchronized sleeping that would be it.

Thats what I thought of it anyway.

what! the first 20 seconRAB is heavy as FAWK! You listen to lots of thrash metal don't you?

six is definitely not their heaviest riffing though.

1:43-whenever is a display of the chugga chugga riff thing. Its a riff (and I mean a riff, they always sound exactly the same) that every metalcore band uses and it always manages to completely ruin whatever song its inserted into. I typically like Whats He Building In There? but god damn that riff annoys me to no end.

That probably wont be too hard to do, just have thrash riRAB and a pulsing dance beat and maybe some barked vocals. Although it would pretty much be touching on industrial...
