What species is Yoda?

I was discussing the Star Wars movies and I asked the question as to what species Yoda belonged to (eg Chewbacca is a wookie) and no one seemed to know. Does anyone else know?

According to the databank at Starwars.com, his species is unknown.

I also read about Star Wars novelists who wanted to develop a back story for Yoda, exploring his origins and species, but the Great One, George Lucas, forbade it.

Yoda's origins are deliberately vague. Something about keeping him mysterious - although him bouncing around like a rubber ball in Eps 2 and 3 rather knackered that.

Although I'm not particularly a Star Wars fan, ep 3 has whetted my appetite for more, I'd love to see that.

Yoda species has never been determined in print, but the first draft of the Star Wars Ep3 script explained that he was a Whills.

Readers of the nover Star Wars A New Hope (Original Editions) will note that the Star Wars series was taken from the Journals of the Whillls.

It may oneday make a back story.
