what sort of freshwater fish should i put into a 50 gallon freshwater fishtank?

i am getting a 50 gallon fishtank very soon but im not sure what fish would go well in it.
i am also unsure of how many fish i can put in the tank.
please help thanks
sorry it is a tropical tank and i want small/medium sized non aggressive fish
