What sort of citation should I use?

the prof. did not specify what sort of citations she wants us to use, just said "look at a paper from Ecology peer-review journal." So, anybody know what sort of citation I should use?

Or else, is MLA an acceptable format for references for a fake scientific-research grant proposal?
