What Sonic cartoon did you like?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Sonic Team hired the 4Kids cast for continuity but they wouldn't have felt they needed too as much if Ryan had been allowed to do the voice. Although Deem Bristow's death may have been a reason to revamp the cast as well, the whole cast was hired. Maybe they're cheap.

..What parent wouldn't allow their kid to watch a Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon? It's not like it was Sonic the Hedgehog: Adult Party Cartoon or something. (There's a scary thought) It was made for kids and came on Saurday mornings.

I love Sonic the Hedgehog (as you can probably tell by my avatar) but I have to admit, none of the Sonic cartoons were really that good. I loved SatAM the most as a kid because it had superior animation to AoSTH, tried to be more serious, and had a catchy theme song. I liked AoSTH because it just focused on Sonic & Tails and was silly. Though AoSTH's animation was utter garbage.

While I loved SatAM, it did always bug me because it lacked Super Sonic, Chaos Emeralds, Amy Rose, Knuckles the Echinda, focused on too many new original characters, and just lacked the feel of the games. Also, Sally took over the sidekick role, while Tails was regulated to a whiny toddler.

I bought the SatAM boxset recently and wonder why I ever liked the show. Sonic says the word 'mondo' in almost every sentence. This show isn't dark at all. I can't stand it when people refer to it as such. I guess the only reason I tolerate it is because of it's nostalgia value. Watching it brings back memories of being in 3rd grade and waking up at 8AM Saturday mornings to watch it.

Sonic X had amazing animation (for the first ten episodes anyway) but had horrific voices, terrible dialogue, and focused on human characters way too much.

I never saw Sonic Underground, and have no interest to.

Back in the early 90's, Sonic was my favourite character out of cartoons, video games, comics, or anything. I loved both of the original cartoons, for different reasons. I rarely got to see either show though, so it was always exciting to watch it. I rented the videos from Blockbuster like crazy.

For a while I sort of bought into SatAM's online hype as the greatest thing ever, although when I got the DVD set and re-watched all of it I sort of realized that the writing wasn't nearly as brilliant as everybody thought, and it suffered many of the same problems as other action/adventure cartoons from the time. That is, a lack of interesting animation; stiff, rigid adherence to model sheets; and often a lack of cohesiveness between the dialogue and the accompanying gestures. I was also put off by many of the seemingly arbitrary changes they made in the second season. The music, character designs and Rotor's voice were much better in the first season (although Sally getting the vest wasn't a big deal).

Constantly reading "AoStH=suck, SatAM=gold" online for a few years sort of lowered my opinion of AoStH too, but when I saw it again I was surprised to find that the animation was actually often very funny, the voices were all hysterical, there was occasionally some amusing dialogue, and in general it could be a very entertaining show.

Sonic Underground always seems to get a lot of hate, and it was pretty lame in concept. As someone else mentioned though, apart from the songs it was a pretty fun show to watch. Sort of a similar atmosphere to SatAM, albeit with different characters. I don't know if I want to buy it on DVD though. I think it's pretty odd that in the late 90's, when the video game series was pretty much dead except for the upcoming Sonic Adventure, they decided to make another Sonic cartoon, especially one with such a weird gimmick. Did the out-of-left-field "Sonic is a prince in a band with his siblings" concept come from the fact that nobody at Sega particularly cared what they did with the character at the time?

I loved the Sonic OVA, or 'Sonic the Movie' as it was released here. Even with the weird dub choices (why did Tails have a stuffed-up nose? "Sawdik, I wadd you do cub ovah heah!"), I enjoyed pretty much everything about it. If only the DVD weren't so rare...

I was excited about Sonic X when I heard about it, and I watched the first dozen episodes, but I was pretty disappointed. I would've maybe liked it, if not for the annoying 4Kids dub, and the human characters. Really, without Chris and his grandfather, that might have been my ideal Sonic show at the time.

Adventures is good crazy fun. Yeah, it often makes little to no sense and has some elements of laziness but mostly I find it a very fun cartoon. Robotnik especially is hilarious. I don't mind when people try to do a bit more with Sonic, but Adventures embodies the concept's fun and cheesey spirit. I think I'll give it a PROMOTION.

The Sonic OVA is awesome for the sole fact that it was animated by the same studio that did the Sonic CD OP/ED. And the voice acting is so crappy it's great. Robotnik alternates between like three different accents.

I found the voice acting to actually ascend mere badness and actually become outright surreal. It's hard to describe, really.

I'll admit though, if there's two big problems I have with the OVA, it's that the character models aren't nearly as good as the aforementioned Sonic CD animation, and that the princess is a mostly human catgirl, so we have a precursor to '06's problem.

Speaking of which, no matter what I may have said about SatAM, I would've taken Princess Sally over whatever her name was from '06 any day. It wouldn't have fixed '06's numerous other problems, but at least we can mark off bestiality and the Uncanny Valley from the list.

UGH. I know what you mean. That episode with the Floating Island toyed with us. I seriously thought Knuckles was going to make a cameo.

I forgot about the OVA. I think that was the best Sonic cartoon.

It did have its flaws, (Sonic's spikes were too short, making him look awkward. The whole bit with Sara and the President was lame, and Knuckles wasn't guarding Angel Island or blabbing about the Master Emerald) but they weren't as bad as the flaws previous Sonic cartoons had. The Animation was nice, it had the Tornado (and it didn't transform into a generic anime fighter-jet, like in Sonic X) lots of Sonic/Tails interaction, and of course, Metal Sonic.

I really wish I hadn't sold my DVD of it. I thought I could easily just pick it up again online if I wanted to see it again. Now it's out-of-print and going for $100. GAH. WHYYYYYY.

I like SatAM, especially since it moved on to the comics to this day.

But I love the Adventures series. One of the reasons because of the Search & Smash Squad and the best RRRRRobotnik of the bunch...

I actually like Knuckles much better that way. Rather than some mystical guardian of an extinct race, he's just a treasure hunter. Which honestly is what he should be.

And Sara playing Sega Saturn with Robotnik was beyond awesome.

I agree. Knuckles is far too limited being stuck on Angel Island all the time.

Not that it matters; he doesn't stay on the island anymore anyway.

As a kid I hated AoSTH and always wanted to watch SatAM which I only got to watch a few times. It especially annoyed me how AoSTH aired all the time.

In High school I re-watched AoSTH and I really liked it, I finally enjoyed the slapstick humor it was going for. And when the DVD of AoSTH came out I finally got to watch the entire series and I was so disappointed. Maybe it was all the praise that fanboys gave the show but it just isn't that great, its not bad but I'm not sure I'd consider it better than AoSTH.

Sonic Underground is hated by everyone but the concept is neat I think I would really enjoy it, haven't watched it yet though. The songs are bad though.

Anyways I may be alone in this but I like the idea of the (american) Sonic cartoons being in continuity.

Sonic the movie: Story is crappy but its neat to have a nicely animated Sonic cartoon that is like the games.

Sonic X: Only seen a few episodes which always seemed to be the really odd ones like the baseball episode and other episodic episodes. So can't comment too much on this but I think I'd like it.

Or the lesser-known...

"Hurry up Dingbot, I want to try this BOOZE!"
"Hoo-wee! Good stuff!"
"Don't you bots know liquor is bad for you?"
*Scratch babbles some slurred words*

I try avoiding threads like these because of the flamewars that go on in them, but I'd have to say Sonic SatAM hands down!! I loved the drama that was incorporated with the series, that and it was brilliantly done for a videogame cartoon crossover.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog tried too hard to be like the Super Mario Bros. Super Show and failed in my honest to God opinion.

The Sonic cartoons are all so different it's kind of hard to compare some of them with each other. That said, I'd probably go with SatAM as my favorite. It might mostly be nostalgia talking, but it was a pretty decent Saturday morning cartoon and it still holds up pretty well today. Not to mention Robotnik was a total badass.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was pretty bad, though kind of fun.

I only saw the first season of Sonic X and thought it was okay. I wasn't a fan of Chris or the other humans that were shoehorned into the series though.

Sonic Underground was just terrible.

My 2 cents:

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog: This series receives a lot of flack nowadays, but what I remember of it (many of the actual episodes are a blur to me) seemed like wacky fun. I can't totally look down on a series that goes for the light-hearted and comical approach, as that's my favorite genre. The Bugs Bunny-esque Sonic, the bloated and silly Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder did make me laugh.

Sonic the Hedgehog (ABC) aka SatAM: My younger brother purchased the entire DVD set of this series at Otakon (sp?) recently, so I've been revisiting this show for the past few weeks. It holds up in some areas and it doesn't in others; the premise, while indeed compelling, tried a little too hard to be bleak and dark, not sure if it was the right way to approach a Sonic cartoon, Sonic himself was basically a Poochie, spewing out lots and lots of "cool" buzzwords, Princess Sally was annoying prudish, Tails was reduced to annoying add-on toddler, and Antoine was a complete fool whose comic relief served largely as grating annoyance. Rotor and Bunnie at least had their moments and were occasionally useful. I really wanted to like Dulcy more, as I'm a long-time fan of dragons, but sadly, she didn't add much to the proceedings.

Sonic Underground: Didn't see much of this show (my local affiliate aired it at an insanely early time in the morning), but what I did see I didn't dig all that much. Sonic is a prince with siblings and he now fights using music? What?

Sonic X: I'm hot and cold over this one. I did like this show's version of Eggman, and the animation was OK, but the actual episodes, characters and premise left something to be desired. Sonic himself could've done a bit more than just rest in a tree until he was needed to save everybody, and depsite all of the hate they received, I didn't mind the Throndike characters (except for Chris, yeah, he was annoying); they just didn't belong on a show about Sonic and company. They might've worked better on their own show, a kind of modern-day Richie Rich, but they'd need a better kid in the lead role. Cream annoyed me to no end.

I'd never seen Satam, didn't even know it existed until a year ago. Watching AoSth was part of my pre-school ritual. I guess it was my favorite. I'd never even heard of chili dogs before that show. Underground was a pretty odd variation and I only saw a handful of episodes. I don't even remember seeing Sonic run fast in that series. I had no problems with Sonic X. I might have liked it more if it took place on Mobius, or whatever Sonic's planet is called.
