What smaller fresh water fish can live together?

Chicken Fry

I will be starting a 30 gallon freshwater fish tank and am not sure what types of fish I can put in together. Id prefer smaller fish, nothing more than 4 inches long...
so, what types of fish are compatible?
(Ps. I will not be having my betta in this tank, he will most likely stay on his own ive decided)
Thanks!

In a 30 gallon, pretty much whatever you want. Some good choices would be:
Fancy Guppies
Endler's Livebearers
Het/Harlequin Rasboras
Corydoras Catfish
Otocinclus
Dwarf platies (stay smaller than regular platies, so you would probably like them more than the regulars)
Zebra Danios/GloFish
Dwarf Honey Gouramis
Neon Tetras
Bloodfin Tetras

I could go on, but pretty much any small danio, tetra, or livebearer (not mollies--they are brackish). Just make sure you choose fish that not only will do well in the tank, but will also do well with each other. For example, don't get a few zebra danios to mix with a bunch of fancy guppies, as the zebras are notorious fin nippers and would find a fancy guppy's fins very entertaining. :P A quick compatibility search will quickly let you know if your fish will do well together. Just make sure that you cycle your tank first, never add too many fish at one time, and allow room to buy multiples of each kind of fish as they are community fish and must be housed in larger groups.

what about a pair of blue rams, either a school of 10-15 of whatever schooler you like or two smaller schools of 7-8 of whatever school you're partial to (I think some hatchets would be neat and different), and then a bottom dweller. cory cats would work, but I personally like kuhli loaches more.

good luck :)

if you are a beginner get fish like guppies sword tails but if you have ha d a year or more with fish keeping go for dwarf cichlids and dwarf gouramis tetras or just go to http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=830
