I've got a serious case of delayed sleep phase syndrome and I'm running low on options to force myself to sleep when required to be up in the morning. So far, I've tried all the basics: deliberate relaxation, breathing exercises, stretching, avoiding stimulating activities, as well as OTC sleep aids and zolpidem. Nothing seems to /reliably/ make me sleep, and if I try to go to bed at 9 or 10 pm I'll often lay awake for five or six hours and then get up out of boredom.
Anyways, I'm at this point now where I take a combination of 10mg zolpidem, 50mg diphenhydramine, 3mg melatonin and 25mg theanine all together at once in order to go to bed before 6am or so. And now even the four of them combined are no longer reliably making me go to sleep. I've asked my doctor about increasing the zolpidem, but she says I'm already taking the maximum dose. I know I've read about a few antipsychotics and antidepressants that are sometimes used for this purpose, but I am entirely unwilling to take drugs from either of those categories. I've also read about methaqualone--which is purportedly very effective--but that has been withdrawn from the US market thanks to misuse. Are there any other options for me at this point, or am I stuck with just trying another Z-drug?
@Robbie,
Appreciate it, but won't take benzodiazapines. I've had severe adverse reactions to one of the other drugs in that family of chemical structures. Benzos are also associated with permanent cognitive deficits as well, so that's a serious reason to not take them.
