What size tires will work for 90 honda civic hatch?

My boyfriend has a 1990 honda civic hatch and needs new tires BADLY

when i say badly.. i mean a chunk of his tires flew off when he was driving. ..
theyre dry and rotted i guess you could say, dont know the technical term

does anyone know the size tires he would need

p.s. he wants small tires
cause its low..

please help thanks :)
