What size bicycle would a typical 8 year old boy need?

I want to buy my son a new bike for Christmas but I don't know what size to get! The 20" ones look about right, but I don't really know just by looking. He is 49-50" tall and weighs 51 lbs. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

For an eight year old that is hard

You want a bike that last
I would see if you could fine a 22 in

My daughter is 8, when she was 5 I got her an 18 in bike. She is to big for the bike, and the 20in will not last long
She is 55in and all legs. So 20In should be fine

At 8, you are looking for a short term bike
Unless he does more that normal 8 year old biking, you do not need to get an expense bike
His next one will be expense in two to 4 years
I would try to fine an 22 in

The best and only way is to take him to a bike shop and have a professional size him up. You want to purchase a bike that fits now but can also grow with him

probably a 20 inch should last a couple of years. Any large department chain store would have one reasobably priced.
