In light of the probability of U.S. car companies receiving government support, what should Toyota do in order to remain competitive?

Nothing. The reason the US car companies are begging for handouts is because the Asian car manufacturers make more reliable, more comfortable, and more affordable vehicles. Toyota should just sit back and set the cruise control.

no matter what the government does, Toyota will still be better than the other U.S. companies. They don't have the huge Unions to screw them over and unlike Ford or GM, they are actually trying to improve their vehicles and make them more fuel efficient. The next car I will buy will be a Toyota. I think the American truck market is still pretty good but if they don't have the fuel efficient trucks, the government will be wasting more of tax payers dollars by throwing money at a problem that can only be fixed by ingenuity.

They won't need to do anything. They are already competitive and leading in sales. If the American companies get bailed out, they are still going to be trailing behind and simply fighting to survive, not winning any sales races. Toyota is not struggling to survive. They haven't had the unions to drag them down, creating overpriced cars with inferior quality.
