What should my ph, ammonia, and nitrite levels be before I put my first fish in?

I have a 20 gallon tank that I bought 2 days ago. I've left it running for 48 hours and the temperature is 78.2 degrees. Should I test my water before I put a guppy in and if so what should the ph, ammonia and nitrite levels be? Should I leave my tank running for more time? What is a good tester kit that I can get from petco or petsmart? I need ammonia and nitrite test kits. I already have ph strips.
