Well I've already gathered an idea of what I want to write about, however I'm struggling to find a conflict of sorts. So far I've decided that I definitely want to base my short story on a main character who is of Japanese descent, but has been raised in Australia and as a result knows nothing of Japanese culture. (could potentially explore the "clash of cultures".) However I want to make it so that he goes through a transformation of sorts and decided that the best way to proceed about with this transformation is to have him study Bushido. However now I'm stuck on trying to find a conflict and I don't want to end up stealing off the plot-line of the Karate Kid. (New kid, moves somewhere, gets beat up, finds a mentor, studies a martial art, wins a competition?) So, in summary. What should my conflict be about?
(P.S. I also need areas in which I can do interesting research in; so far it would be Japanese Culture and Bushido. I have considered a female companion for my main character, but I'd be terrible with writing romance. Although I'm open to it, if there's some sort of complication or problem that occurs.)
