What should I write about on my "Issue of Importance" essay?

I am applying for colleges and one of the essays is to write about an issue of importance. It can be personal, school related, local, political, or international. I have to explain the significance to myself, my family, my community, or my generation.

I need help thinking of something unique that will catch the readers attention. Any Suggestions??
 
You normally do not want to do something too topical, everyone does that

So no terrorism and no healthcare

Try to do something that can apply easily to yourself and family

Has anyone ever been the victim of a violent crime?

Crime can catch people's attention and if their is a personal component then its sure to catch the readers attention
