I am getting ready to leave for basic training in a week. I wanted to know from those that have been through it what can I expect when I get there. I heard that I will be required to run something like 5 miles in 45 minutes or less, is this true? They wouldn't start us off running that much would they? I've been running and getting ready, but I am no where near 5 miles at this point.

You are worked up to everything that you do. They don't just give you an impossible task and expect you to complete it. When I went though boot camp at Parris Island they didn't tell us how far we were running we just ran until we were told to stop. The longer your in boot camp the better you get at running and then before you know it your running 4 miles like it's nothing. Its a lot of hard work in the beginning but as time goes on your mind and body adjusts and you stop being sore all of the time and start building muscle.

Army or Marines?

Army: 2 mile run, 2 month basic training, not too bad.

Marines: 3 mile run, 3 moth basic training, a nightmare that I haven't recovered from since 1989.

Don't worry, they will make you ready.

The 5 mile 45 minute standard is what I remembered from Airborne school, but they really ran us at a 7 minute pace for the first 4 miles than basically walked us the last mile, those dirty cheaters.
