What should I do to get myself onto the path to becoming a great YA author?

How difficult is it to become a well-known published YA author? I am a twenty year old male. I consider myself to be a "good writer," well above the average in terms of technique. However, my strength certainly lies in my creativity and ability to generate interesting stories. I aspire to write YA novels and become as popular (or certainly more popular... for I believe that high aspirations are necessary) as the big names out there.
What should I do now to prepare myself? I currently take Creative Writing courses at the University level. I write... A LOT... That's really about it. Any other suggestions?

Well, if you did a little bit of research, you would find this question on here a LOT. There are a lot of people aspiring to be YA authors, including me.
I suggest majoring in Creative Writing, maybe even getting a masters as well. Just taking classes will help, but not as much.
Also, complete something so it's ready for submission. If you want to write novels, finish a novel. Then find an agent, which will then help you find a publisher. Hope that helps!

Taking Literature courses and Children's Literature courses in college wouldn't hurt. That way you can see what is classified as children's books (so that you know what to include and what to exclude in your writing so that it can be marketed to teens more effectively). And, I guess, just READ. Reading a lot of books in the genre you're wanting to write for will help you know what's out there and know you're competition. :) It's always best to know what you'll be up against. Besides, when writing to publishers to ask if they could publish your book, you'll need to add what makes your book so special and what makes it better and different than all the other books out there.
