What should I do at the gym?

Hi, ive been trying to get in shape and i've started going to the gym. I go 5 times a week maybe. I switch my workout around sometimes like one day ill do the elliptical for an hour and then go to the machines (for arms, legs etc.), just for a bit like a set of 16 on each arm for example. Then another day ill do treadmill instead of elliptical. Any tips on what i should do??? should i make a routine??? Im not trying to get a six pack haha just loose some weight. I no abs are made in the kitchen but still. HELP!
