What should I cook for my civil war project?

I read to book "Across Five Aprils" and since it's set in the civil war, I thought I would cook/bake something for my class that relates to the civil war. (My classmate voted me class president because I always bring food for projects in classes, ha ha!) Do you have any ideas for something to make fast? Maybe something that soldiers ate or just families during that time would be fine. Also, I need to be able to serve it easily. And as you might have already inferred, I would love to make something tasty. :)
