What should be the American response if North Korea test fires a missile towards Hawaii?

They are threatening to "test fire" off some missiles towards Hawaii. Myself, i dont think they could hit the broad side of a barn right now but still a threat is a threat. Lets say they shoot this thing off and it comes within 500 miles of the Hawaiian coast and obviously demonstrates that they could take out Hawaii if they wished. That might sound far but when you think about it thats too close for comfort. What should be the American response? Should we let the UN handle it and send out one of their useless letters saying they are very very angry? Or should we take the matter into our own hands before its too late and N/K gains the ability to strike the United States mainland? Or is their a third option?
Keep in mind that N/K is roughly 4500 miles away from Hawaii. The missile range they are firing is 4000 miles. Thus it probably cant hit Hawaii, but if we dont put a stop to this now within a couple more years of technological development N/K will certainly be able to pick up that extra 500 miles they need easily.
There is a chance it could be shot down, but then again their is a chance it might not be.
Regardless even if it is shot down during flight i am talking about the aftermath-the response afterwards. Do we sit back and let them try again and again? Or do we take matters further?

I didn't think North Korea was a member of the United Nations.
I think our US Navy should engage the target and destroy it as soon as the trajectory is determined to be aiming for Hawaii. We are not an unprotected nation.
