I am a graduate teacher and have only been teaching for about 8 months. I was employed for about a month to teach sport at a special school while the sport teacher was on leave and I established a really good rapport, especially with the middle school students.
Just recently the sports teacher has returned and the art teacher has gone on leave so I'm now taking her art classes for about 6 weeks. I'm only in my first week of art and the students are missing me playing sport with them since I would always participate. They kept asking me to come out at lunch and play so I was doing that all week.
Then on Thursday one of the nastier middle teachers approached me and told me it was probably best if I didn't keep playing sport with them at lunch since I wasn't their 'friend'. These students however are special needs kids and I know that I'm helping them with their football skills while we're out there. I'm also fullfilling my need to play sport since the art all day is driving me crazy. (I'm a sport teacher).
So I told the other teacher I wasn't being their friend, just helping them brush up their football skills. The next day though she sent another teacher to come into my art class to ask me if I could stop going out to play sport with them for a while since it was just reving them up and that they were misbehaving in class after lunch.
I am certain this isn't true though and that this teacher just doesn't want to see me having a good time with her students. Whenever I am out there with the students they are well behaved and don't play up at all. They listen to me if I tell them to do something and they are in line. Why is she saying this stuff and what should I do so I can keep playing lunch sport with these students?
