What should America's State Religion Be?

The USA a "pagan" country? Hmmm, I suppose you could retrofit that statue of Lincoln into something more appropriately Roman or Greek, or maybe even Asatru if you got creative.

I can just hear it now: "One Nation under Iupiter Pater and Mars Ultor!"

Bring back traditional Roman values of continence, piety, modesty, family, and Republicanism! ;)

Okay, but howabout divorce?
If we go by Catholic principles, it's illegal
If we go by Anglican principles, it's legal.
So, which is it?

People did not feel that way in Holy Loch when I was there..........Lets just hope your the exception and not the rule when it comes to the Scots.......

They were great allies and I have nothing but respect for them........

By what defintion are they "God's writings"? Inspired by God, yes, but written by humans. There is nothing to suggest that God dictated the Bible in the same way as Muslims believe the Koran was dictated. The Old Testament is the history of humanity's relationship with God, it was written by various humans at different times. The new testament was compiled on the basis of weighing the value of the texts concerned and how useful they had been, who is to say that mistakes were not made in that selection? And, given the differences between hebrew, aramaic, greek etc., how do you know that, even if the message recorded in the Bible was that desired by God, it still is in the versions we have today. There are serious questions about traditional translations of many passages.

Let me ask you this. Do you think adultery should be a criminal offence? If not, why not?

In reading the first posts, I am amused that I have seen no answer to this question.
I have asked myself, and repeatedly it's a pointless question cause nobody can answer.

If our country / government are truly "founded on Christian principles", then can somebody explain WHAT CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES exist that are found in our government???

Oh. The irony.
I invite people to review the Bill of Rights.
United States Bill of Rights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No mention of God.

Review the rest of the Amendments if you like.
No mention of God.

Review the ENTIRE CONSTITUTION. At the end, when they give the DATE of the Constitution, "God" is referenced to the same degree that God is referenced when somebody says this is the year 2009 A.D.

Over and over again, I see people proclaim our nation/government is founded on Christian principles.
But when challenged to substantiate, the question of WHICH supposed principles are there cannot be answered.
Like VoR demonstrates here, the claim is repeated based on false assumptions, presumably because they are echoing the false claims of what they were taught but never questioned...

I could do a lot better, there is no question about that............

As could all Christians including the president but we try.........A person that comes to mind to me is Ex President Carter who was a "Born Again" Christian who supported murder in the womb..........Sorry, that just does not compute.......

Or we go go to EX President Clinton who was a Christian and attended Church every Sunday and the rest of the week he was getting BJs in the oval office by a woman young enough to be his Grand daughter............Can you say hypocrite?

And thenw we have another prominent democrat, The Reverend (and I use the term loosely) Jesse Jackson who while acting as a spiritual advisor to EX President Clinton was in pregnating one of his staff...........

HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, basically with a number of people on these boarRAB claiming that the USA was founded on Judeo-Christian values I thought I might ask whose Judeo-Christian values those were, or whose they should be.

Or that the Bible isn't God's word.
Or that God did not mean the Bible to have only a single interpretation
One must believe in the Word, who is the Logos, the Lord Jesus Christ. As Jo says, Timothy was written before 'the bible' existed. Yep, this seems fine Where does it say that the baby is such a kind of life that killing it is murder. The Israelites are told not to kill, but also to slaughter the inhabitants of Canaan. Saying abortion is covered by murder presupposes it's wrong. Remember, it is not the action but the thought and will. This seems fair, assuming abortion is sinful, or if any selfish act, even one not sinful in itself, is wrong.

SounRAB exactly like someone dissing a street gang's colors and retribution being demanded in the form of extreme punishment. Has our level of intellectual compassion as a democracy sunk so low that blind emotion is now a primary decision/law maker? What's next, christianity as a requirement for citizenship?

I should think Buddhism or Shinto. Those both permit you to "pick and choose" from all different religions and form your own path rather than take someone else's hard-trodden road.

That is great philosophy but if we had loved the Japanese anf Germans after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 we would probably be speaking German or Japanese............

He is against Gay marriage as are the majority of Americans and religions......

He has probably spent more money on the poor then any other president with his prescription drug program and his faith based initiative......

I sense a Bush hater in you....This president could not nothing that would every please you...........

Please, less of the Yoda impressions. And can you not imagine that someone might dislike Bush because of his actions, rather than dislike his actions because they hate him? Bush has pandered to the rich and cut their taxes massively. He plans to abolish inheritance tax. He obviously accepts people who serve Mammon.

huh?

It's a big book - I suspect I could read it a million times and continue to learn. VoR has admitted to not really being familiar with it.

I do not take everything in the Bible at face value but instead put it context - I consider all of what is God's in my faith - not just one book. Plus I don't have to believe one word of it to be familiar with what it says.

Now - my challenge to VoR stanRAB - he says Jesus was not a pacifist - can he back that up or not?

We understand, we just dont agree.

Did the french not help the americans shake off colonial rule?

Its a pity that in such a thread I come off as an america hater. I am no such thing. I like all americans I have met, and I think there are many positive sides to their society. I dont agree with the government, or its foreign policy.

If I was an american, I would not want the likes of VoR speaking for my country, as he would make us all look like acrowd of moronic chest beaters.
