what shoes to buy for a hike?

I am going on a camping trip on the beach with a club from school. We are also suppose to hike. I really don't want to spend money right now because I'm trying to save. The only shoes I have is converse and no hiking shoes. Any suggestions?

You can readily hike in cushioned athletic shoes such as running shoes or cross training shoes or light hiking shoes but converse really don't have the cushioning and you're risking some injury depending on the strenuousness of the hike and the terrain. But who knows, last time I hiked near the beach at Point Reyes National Seashore the grassy trail was so soft and inviting I ended up hiking a couple miles barefoot. I suggest you borrow some newish athletic shoes from a friend or relative or pick some up at a garage sale or even *gasp* Wal-mart.
