What settings can I use for portraits with a Ring-Flash?

I just purchased an AlienBeeds AB800 RingFlash and i'm having trouble getting good quality portraits. I know the ringflash is a great light, i've seen other photographers work who had the AlienBees...What would be a nice setting to have it on with flash on, and with the flash off? Any suggestions?
