Eduction has been touted as the Great equalizer. If this is true, then education is the vehicle through which each person has an opportunity to develop themselves and achieve their own American Dream regardless of the circumstances they are born into. Some critics of education challenged this view, saying education stratifies society, giving some people oportunity and limiting others. Rather than opening doors as the equalizer, education stunts the development of people based on their ethnicity, social class and gender.

With all that said, do you feel the role in education is as the:
1. Great equalizer
2. Equalizer= for some people
3. Neither equalizer or stratifier
4. Mostly stratifier but helps some people move up
5. Total Stratifier

When you answer, can you please explain why you picked what you did?

Thank you in advance for your answers. This is part of my homework assignment and I need your help!

I would say Equalizer for Some People because it depends on how (and if) people take advantage of the educational opportunities offered here.

For example, coming from a lower-middle class family, there would be no way I could afford college if it wasn't for the government's Pell Grant. The Pell Grant completely covers my cost of education, something I probably wouldn't have had otherwise.

Yet other people really could care less, and are content dropping out of high school doing the factory work their mothers and fathers did before them. It all depends on the individual

Maybe 4.
Honestly, your education depends on where you live. Since taxes fund schools, the wealthier areas are going to have the best books, computers, teachers etc.
If you live in the ghetto, then the school might be hurting for funds and not have the resources needed to compete with wealthier schools.
However, anyone with the desire to overcome adversity can in this country.
