It was Lincoln's intention to treat the south, not like a conquered nation, but like a returning brother. As a result of his assassination, this attitude was never prevalent as a government policy. The south was harshly treated, which might in fact have resulted in the Jim Crow laws and lynchings that were a most unfortunate part of U.S. life for Afro-Americans from the late 1800's until the 1960's.
