I've heard before that, at the start of his career, there were two record labels that wanted to sign Barry Manilow. THe first of these recognized his extreme talent as a songwriter and told him thhat he could write any of his own original songs that he wanted to and they's promote his work andstand by him. The second said that they had a lot of songs written by other people that they wanted him to sing, meaning that his career would take a more commercial top 40 turn. He signed with this second label, Bell Records, which was shortly thereafter bought out by Clive DAvis and Arista REcords. He's always been criticized for doing that, for not taking the singer-songwriter choice and being more like Dylan, Neil Young, or Springsteen. But what IS this first record label he almost signed with. The Wikipedia biography of Barry Manilow doesn't tell.
