What purpose does religion serve to civilization and would it fall apart...

...without religion? It seems to me that religion’s purpose is to create illusory fantasies for the poor or otherwise miserable. Economic realities prevent them from finding true happiness in this life, so religion tells them that this is okay because they will find true happiness in the next life. People are in distress and religion provides solace. Without religion to hope and wish upon, would civilization fall apart? Before anyone gets angry, remember that ALL religions are nothing more than ones own philosophy.
This is 2010, and my question pertains to this time period. Geez!
 
Without it the world would have even more trouble than it already has, you can tell it's already falling apart with some of the ones who once had religion and have now walked away and are following their own path.

(2 Timothy 3:1-5) But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2Â*For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3Â*having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4Â*betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5Â*having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.
 
Religion was probably before a Government. In fact religion probably was the "government." Religion held the community together through a joint belief. Religion probably settled the disputes and made sure the community survived. It's just not needed now. We have a structure that does that job without belief in a higher power.
