research the market... a lot. get books on publishing, know it inside and out so you can get a good deal. writing is only half the battle.
also, publishers don't specialize in new authors, because, frankly, that'd be dumb. why would you make an author big, and then just give them up to someone else?

Normally you would hire an agent and they would do all of that for you.
