What preparation needs to be done for exterior painting?

I am looking to pain the exterior of our home. We currently have a cedar. Obviously the painting is the easy part, but I'm looking to hire somebody who knows how to do a good job with the prep work. I want to find out what questions to ask. If somebody could tell me what steps need to be taken before the painting begins I would really appreciate it.
