What php use and how bad do I need to learn it?

Ok I'm making a website and trying to learn COMPUTER coding. I've all really know html..java xhtml and so on But I'm stuck on php.& mysql And yes I know the website php.net. I just want to know how import in is to learn? Also what is good for? How bad do I need to learn it also Do I really need to learn to make my website better. Also if so do I have to download anything?....I kown that I can download at php.net
