There are two possible patterns of speciation. Crocodiles have been around for millions of years. If I said that there is a species of crocodile living today that looks almost exactly like a crocodile fossil found millions of years ago. There is also another species of crocodile living today that has some characteristics similar to the one previously stated. What pattern are we discussing? Why is it not the other?
