What part is the gym in American culture?

I'm doing a research project. I really want something involving a gym. How does this sound as a topic? "The gym is now a big part of the American culture" and then I would get into how the gym is not necessary a place of exercise but it is a place for socialization.
 
its more for exercise anyway because americans have become so obese. if you have enough breath to socialize then you are not working hard enough. pick a new topic kid.
