What parameters do the designers of Sudoku puzzles use to pre-determine the...

...difficulty of the...? ...problem?
Hi gang,

I had a go at asking this question once before but probably didn't phrase it right - however, one of our beloved members has started to design Sudokus for us and it made me want to ask the question again. So: Sudoku puzzles are always graded according to difficulty level, right? What I'd like to know is: when the designer determines that they're going to produce a puzzle of a given level of difficulty, what parameters do they manipulate? Put another way, if they were programming a computer to produce difficulty level X, what features of the puzzle do they tell the computer to manipulate, and how?

(Last time I asked this, lots of people wrote telling how to *solve* them - I'm trying to ask how you tool up for designing different types).

This is probably a really testing question to answer ... wish I could award a prize for the best!

Lots of love, you wonderful people,

Valerie.
