What Paint To Use On A Guitar?

I'd like to paint something on my guitar. It is a stratocaster copy and I'm planning on just painting outside the pick guard. Is it ok to use a normal paint with a paintbrush or would it be best to just use the acrylic paint as I've read should be used. Also would it work the same to use regular paint and just cover it in acrylic gloss?
 
You may have to strip the paint from the guitar first. If you paint on the finish it has now, it will probably flake off.

It could work though, who knows. Good luck.
