What other way could I update my iPhone 3gs?

I bought a used iPhone that has 3.1.3 firmware and when I try to upgrade it to 4.0.1 or 4.0, via the restore method, iTunes gives me an error that my mobile "isn't eligible for the requested build." I have tried in DFU mode and it didn't work also.
So any advice?
