what one film would make you invest in blu-ray - if any ?

None yet. I'm not bothered at the moment. I also heard something about China/Japan working on a new format that is suppose to be better... must find where I heard about that. Anyone any information?

Scarface - I already have it on VHS, on VCD, on Laser disc, on DVD (including special editiion) and hope to get it on Blu-Ray when ever it comes out. :D

Tony Montana in HD 1080p would be some sight!

anyone know if there are plans for the greatest movie of all time to be released on Blu ray? :)

It annoyed me no end that Sony decided not to give us the PS3 with the option to play DVD's as well as Blu-Ray. For that reason alone, nothing will make me switch to Blu-Ray for the forseeable future.

I have a large DVD collection and am not about to replace it all for something that basically gives us a slightly better picture (so what, I have no complaints about the picture I have on DVD) and a whole load of extra stuff that doesn't interest me in the least anyway.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the price of a Blu-ray! No chance of me paying the over the top prices when I can pick up brand new DVD's for under

it's interesting that games consoles can have a "killer" game that sells the console on it's own, yet blu-ray can't have a similar thing - that one film that makes people really want to go out and buy a player.

China/Korea are supposed to be looking at an alternative to Bluray but its not better quality.

Its merely a way of not paying Sony licence fees for using Bluray.

Mainstream R&D around the world has already developed superior HD to what we have now - about 6 times better IIRC - but its likely to be many years before it gets any further.

I think Star Wars might give the format a boost more than any other title but I dont think there's a movie in existence that could change it into a mass market format.

The Matrix showed what dvd could do over VHS but the jump from DVD to Bluray is less significant so it only really appeals to those who either own the PS3 or who really need the best pictures you can get.

I have several thousand dvd's but I would estimate that no more than 100 would ever be upgraded to Bluray.

If there is a BD option on a new title I will get it but upgrading is only for my real faves.

But I got sick of waiting for the original Day The earth Stood Still to come out so I just swapped my PS3 for a multiregion Bluray player and have the US release and the superior US Planet of the Apes boxset.

To say the difference between dvd and BD gives a "slightly better " picture is inaccurate.

If you have a set of at least 32" the difference should be a bit more.

Whether the improvement is worth paying the extra is a different argument altogether - and one with some merit if you dont already have an HD ready tv.

Dario Argento fans might like to know that The Stendahl Syndrome is out and Bird With the Crystal Plumage is out in January.

Where's Suspiria?

I think what he meant was he wanted to be able to buy a PS3 that plays dvd's without cost being added by its ability to play Bluray

When you consider that the PS3 is a next gen console & HD player rolled into one it's pretty cheap I'd say.

It's also future proofed so it's built for the long haul.

New release Blurays can be picked up for circa 15 quid in the UK if you shop around.

The reason DVRAB are now so cheap is because it's a dying format.

DVD will be usurped eventually. As screens get bigger and HD equipment gets cheaper - eventually SD-DVD just wont be able to cut it when expanded up to a large screen size (50 inches +) - even if upscaled, the image artifacts and bluring will jsut become too noticeable.

In a moment of carelessness I recently bought the 30th anniversary edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I'm sure it'll be great, but I don't have a Blu-Ray player, or even a decent flat screen telly or sound set up. I must remember to check the Amazon basket before pressing 'order' next time. :o

I will go down the blu-ray route, but at the moment I feel bad about buying a decent player and another HDTV. My current 'cheapo' HDTV is barely two years old and it just feels wrong to replace it so soon. It doesn't help that I recently bought a rather nice, but worryingly expensive 24" Samsung PC monitor, which just reinforces my nagging concern that I'd just be spending a lot of money on yet more unnecessary fluff.

Maybe around next September time I'll force a crowbar in to my wallet and do things properly.
