What neighborhood should I stay in while traveling in Manhattan for 8 nights?

I'm traveling with my husband and 18 year old son. We want a safe clean room in a great location to see the sights.

Any major midtown hotel would be fine.

I'd stay on the Upper West Side because a better " neighborhood " than Midtown is , it's usually cheaper and the subway is still really close to anywhere in that neighborhood
