What music format are you using ?

Hello all- I have been having some issues/thoughts with the music on my N73. I have a 1Gb card and have been putting music on in MP3 at 128kbps... and the card is nearly full with about 350 songs.
Absolutely not a problem at all but I do know that Nokia also supports eAAC+ which according to their website will pretty much double the amount of songs (this is at 48kbps so if anyone has experience with this format and kbps rate tell me if the sound is shyte) I would like to try it but can not figure out how to get the songs into that format, even with the Nokia music manager.
I believe one problem is that my Nokia music manager never connects to the Gracenote music recognition service....
Rcadden told me about using iTunes but they dont support eAAC+, does anyone know how to get songs in eAAC+ ??

Cheers, LL-

I use exclusively .ogg now... though to be honest, 99% of the time I just stream shoutcast now. But .ogg at 96kbps gives you plenty of room, and sounds better than .mp3's.

Cheers olly.. I used my CD ripper program to convert songs to .ogg but they took up more space than my MP3's at 128 maybe I had the .ogg files at some high bitrate. I'll have to go home and check it out and try to rip at 96.
I'd like to purchase a 2GB card and would like to get as much music on as possible. I'm gonna give the .ogg at 96 a shot.

Cheers, LL-

Thanks for the OP mention! though I've recently (yesterday) moved to exclusively Winamp. I think it supports eAAC or whatever, and it's awesome, I plug my N73 in (mass storage mode) and it asked if I wanted to recognize that as a media player, I said yes, and I get all kinds of autofill options (percentage of total space) and everything. Really seamless, I'm a huge fan. Plus Winamp supports watch folders, so if you periodically download massive amounts of music (or rip them...) it'll automatically add them to your library. There's also jillions of more plug-ins and stuff for winamp. I used to use it before I got my iPod and am glad to be back to it.

When I use the nokia music manager to transfer music over to the phone, it automatically asks me if I want to convert my mp3's over to eACC+. I always choose "no" just because I don't have any experience with that format. But if it's still decent sound quality and allows you to double the amount of songs, what are the drawbacks?

Are you using the new Winamp or the good, er, original winamp?

I use XMMS on Linux, which is essentially the same as the original winamp... still the best damned media player on any platform in my opinion.

See, I just don't like the new WinAmp... I use it at work (the only place I actually have access to Windoze lol), and it's just too bloated. The beauty of the original winamp (and it's linux port xmms) is that it's so lightweight. Back when only a handful of people knew what mp3's were, we were all using winamp or xmms... and I still like them best today.

Of course, that was the heyday of file sharing too, when the best damned file sharing proggy on the planet still existed (Audiogalaxy!!!!!)

awww, AudioGalaxy. It truly was, way better than Napster, imo.

Anyways, I agree with you on Winamp, though the new winamp is more of a multimedia hub, but takes up WAY less resources than freakin iTunes. It's not quite as friendly in some aspects, but it's not quite as dumbed down, either. ANd the fact that you can skin it and add plugins makes it better handsdown imo.

I've got all my music backed up as 192Kpbs WMA's using Windows Media Player 11 and I've added all the album art E.T.C.
I then re encoded them using Easy CDDA Extractor to 48Kbps HE-AAC files and now have 1954 songs which equals 5 days, 23 hours worth of music, all in 3.1GB of space.

The songs sound good enough to me and have made me able to have all my collection so far on my N91. Amazing considering its only 4Gigs.

Everything is organised and I love having the album art on my songs.

When I had my 6682, and now with my W810i I use MP3. I know it is not as efficient as say AAC/MP4, but MP3 compatiblity cannot be beat. My whole music collection is in MP3 format. Everything from car CD systems, cell phones, computers, CD players, MP3 players can use the same file. Just gotta stick with an oldie, but goodie.

yeah I use MP3, 128kb. I'm no audiophile, either, though. So long as the bass isn't flattened out and it sounds ok, that's all I'm looking for. Which most of mine does.

I agree that the old winamp was good, but this new one, well, I like it. It's still rather light-weight, and has alot of the old features. One thing I like is how it handles portables. When I plug in my iPod, I can setup sync settings, and I also have the option to "copy to local media". that's right. highlight all and click "copy to local media" and there you go, tags and all. Makes moving from iTunes REAL easy.

It also works great with my N73. When I plug it in (mass storage mode) it asks if i want to register that as a portable media player. I say yes, and then there's an autofill feature I can activate with a percentage meter. I.e. I can say only put enough music on there to fill my memory card up 60% of the way, or whatever percentage (of note, it bases this percentage off the TOTAL capacity, not the current capacity. So if you've got a few movies on a 2GB card, it still does the percentage off a 2GB capacity.)

Then those tracks show up in my Music Player. Easy as pie.

Plus there's so many skins and plugins available, it's freakin awesome. One thing I do a few times a week is with StreamRipper32, it rips a Shoutcast stream into indvidual mp3s, tagged with artist/track title. And with Winamp you can setup Watch Folders, so at night i turn streamripper on, and then in the morning just hit "sync" and I have a whole crapload of new music to freshen up my ipod with. Freakin sweet.

Cheers for the feedback everyone, I am not concerned so much with sound quality as much as getting the largest amount of songs on the phone at decent quality. I managed to get a few songs converted to eAAC+ with Nokia MM but it's too buggy and freezes up alot and it's too much of a headache. I also used my MP3 ripper to convert my MP3 files to .ogg and the .ogg files take up more space than the MP3's !!
I am gonna give Chazams way a try and am downloading easy cd-da.COLOR]
I downloaded dbpoweramp yesterday but it wont give me the option of using eAAC+ but it says it will on the website ?? I have to get my act together and figure this out, I am sure it's just my lack of knowledge above all other things.

Cheers, LL-

to use DBOPWERAMP you need to use the Nero HE-AAC codec.
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-mp4.htm

I prefer easy CDDA extractor as it peforms better with my dual cor CPU.

Want me to upload a HE-AAC track to my webspace for you to try on your N91?

Cheers Chazam !!! It seems to be good now as I am using the CDDA Extractor, I am basically putting my CD's into the "My Music" folder and then use CDDA to extract the files from there and then burn into HE-AAC (48kbps) but they call it MPEG4 which I assume is the same thing ?? When converted it goes back into the same folder but pops up as MPEG4 Video ??? But I have already put a converted song onto my N73 and works great and have shaved off about 50-60% of the space as opposed to the old MP3 format and the music quality is the same.
I am using MP3 Ripper to rip my audio CD's into MP3 at 256kbps for dcent sound quality and then do the CDDA convert from there, I figured I would get a tad better sound quality in the end, who knows ???
The only time consuming part is that when all the converted files go back into "My Music" they are all seperate, I'll have to figure out a way to get the to automatically go into a folder so I have them all in one spot for easy transfer to the phone, as opposed to single tracks all over the place.

I am gonna do some more CD's and will post a quick reply in case anyone is having a similar problem and wants to convert, it's pretty easy.

Cheers mate, LL-

Hmm.. working good but when I transfer songs/album to the phone they come up as seperate songs under the heading "unknown" ?? I think I may have to fill in that "Metadata" information on the right side of the screen, with song and artist information ??
