I think it takes place in the late 1800s - early 1900s. A little rich, British girl who lives in India is orphaned by some sort of disease epidemic and has been abandoned by the family servants. There is a scene where she is eating food that has been left out from a party or banquet and she tries some wine from a goblet. I don't remember much else, I think that she has dark hair. It might have been filmed in the 90's. I have been trying for days to remember what movie this is from, I hope this is enough information. Thanks.
